Dial-up service numbers for Michigan State University (obsolete)

Academic Computing and Network Services at MSU provides dial-up network access in the Greater Lansing area and South Central Michigan area.

This dial-up service is part of the MichNet dial-in service. See "Merit: Local Dial-in Access Numbers" for access numbers in other parts of Michigan. Also see "Networking and Dial-up Information" for further MSU-specific details.

Please Note: After July 2, 2007, all dial-up access numbers outside the Greater Lansing area will be terminated. Many users have abandoned dial-up in favor of broadband alternatives. Merit Network is discontinuing dial-in services due to declining use. People currently using local dial-up access numbers outside of the Greater Lansing area (999-2678) may wish to explore an alternative Internet service provider. This dial-up service has the advantage of allowing MSU to provide local dial-up access numbers in various locations within South Central Michigan, all of which connect back to East Lansing with no long distance charges. Also, by connecting back to East Lansing, you will generally avoid the need for a dial-up usage "token", which is often required for the existing non-Lansing MichNet numbers.

The numbers to call, by exchange:

The above list covers most of the South Central Michigan area, within the Lansing LATA. The Lansing LATA includes most of the 517 area code.

Notes:

1. Users who are outside the 517 area code or the Lansing LATA, but who can call one of the above locations as a local number, may need to use 10 or 11-digit dialing to reach these numbers (i.e. "1-517-xxx-2678"). The call should still be treated as a local call with no additional charges.

   This would apply to users in the following areas:

   Bellevue, Gregory, Hastings, and Olivet.

   If you find that you cannot complete the call, even using 11-digit dialing, please let us know. Also, if you find that you are being billed for long distance charges, contact your phone company, but let us know as well.

   Gregory users please note: Calls to the Stockbridge number (1-517-985-2678) are still being treated as toll calls. Instead, you can call the Fowlerville number, 517-915-2678; this will be a local call.

   
    
2. These numbers will function identically to the Greater Lansing number, but are listed for completeness.
    
3. As of 25-Sep-2002, dial-up users in an area serviced by Century Telephone, Frontier Communications or Springport Telephone Co. are still unable to dial the numbers listed above. We do not expect that this situation will change at any time within the foreseeable future. If you have further information (i.e., these numbers work now), please let me know.
    
4. These phone numbers are provided by Merit Network, Inc., as Michnet dial-up access numbers. These numbers function identically to the MSU-provided numbers.

If you experience difficulty attempting to use one of the above numbers, please contact the ACNS Help Desk. The following information may be requested:

• Your name, phone number, and e-mail address
• The time and date you tried to use the service
• The MSUnet (Pilot) id used for dial-up access (if different from above)
• The phone number of your modem line (if different from above)
• The phone number you attempted to call
• The symptoms you experienced (e.g. call could not be completed, could not login, poor performance).
