Michigan State University SSL VPN Paid Access

This document describes the paid access options for the MSU SSL VPN Access service.

Individual User access

The SSL VPN service is available at a cost to individuals with an MSU NetID who do not qualify for no-cost access (see the availability guidelines). The SSL VPN service is NOT available to holders of a departmental, group, or other shared NetID.

The cost for SSL VPN access is $7/month, plus a $10 setup fee, for each individual MSU NetID to be authorized. The fees must be billed to a MSU departmental account number.

Please complete the MSU ATS SSL-VPN Request Form if you wish to add or remove SSL-VPN service for a specific NetID.

Virtual VPN Service

An MSU department or other administrative unit may purchase a virtual VPN server for use within their unit. This server operates on the same hardware as the central SSL VPN service, but is independently manageable.

The primary applications for the virtual VPN service are:

• Ability to authorize a limited set of userids or to use a local authentication server, e.g. to restrict to departmental staff only.
  
• Availability of a dedicated IP address range, which can be added to local system firewalls for remote access needs.

The virtual SSL VPN user costs are based on the maximum simultaneous use, rather than per authorized user. A minimum of 5 simultaneous user licences must be purchased with each virtual VPN.
